A bond is a debt instrument, whereby one party lends money to another party. The lender is called the buyer of the bond and the borrower is called the seller or issuer of the bond. The buyers of bonds therefore lend money to the issuers.
In return for the loan, the issuer promises to pay the bondholder a predetermined rate of interest during the life of the bond and to repay the face or par value of the bond (the principal) when it matures, or comes due.
